Garrão Poente is a coastal bathing water located on a beach with restricted use, associated with sensitive natural systems. The beach features golden sand with an extensive shoreline of 610 metres and dunes covered in typical sand vegetation. The area experiences a tidal range of 3.4 metres and mean wave height of 0.5 metres, with predominant winds from the east to southeast.

Coastal bathing water in the Ribeiras do Algarve river basin (water body code CWB-I-6). Beach length is 610 metres. Tidal range is 3.4 metres with mean wave height of 0.5 metres.

Location

Municipality of Loulé in the Algarve region of Portugal. Monitoring point coordinates: Latitude 37.0433°, Longitude -8.0571° (ETRS 89).

Season

1 June to 30 September 2025. Monthly sampling frequency.

Water Quality

Garrão Poente and Garrão Nascente (PTCH7U) were grouped together, with this monitoring point representing both sites. The water is classified according to Decreto-Lei 135/09 of 3 June 2009. No days of bathing advisories or prohibitions were recorded due to short-term pollution events during the 2024 bathing season.

Risks

Microbiological contamination may occur due to sporadic malfunction of sanitation infrastructures or during intense precipitation events causing surface run-off and overflows. Cyanobacteria proliferation is unlikely. Macroalgae proliferation is uncommon. Phytoplankton proliferation is unlikely.
