Gran Baia is a bathing beach on Lake Grande di Avigliana in the Piedmont region near Turin, Italy. The beach consists of bare ground and gravel, equipped with benches and tables, and functions as a picnic area. It is 25 metres wide and located at 346 metres above sea level. The bathing water is classified as Good based on monitoring data from 2020–2023.

Lake Grande di Avigliana. The bathing area covers 0.071 km². The lake basin is surrounded by hills with discontinuous urbanization around its perimeter.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Good. Based on 20 routine samples from 2020–2023. Escherichia coli 90th percentile: 214.9 MPN/100 ml, 95th percentile: 429.7 MPN/100 ml. Enterococci 90th percentile: 152.0 MPN/100 ml, 95th percentile: 285.4 MPN/100 ml. The bathing water falls within the Avigliana 2 homogeneous zone with a medium-low impact indicator. No authorized direct discharges are present, though small unauthorized discharges from individual buildings cannot be completely excluded.

Risks

The lake is in a state of eutrophy due to past sewage discharges. Cyanobacterial blooms have been detected intermittently in the photic zone at the centre of the lake; the bathing water is at risk of cyanobacterial proliferation. In the past four years, 10 cyanobacterial samples were analysed, of which 2 showed a density of 20,000 cell/ml or greater. No toxic effects have been reported. The circumlacual collector is undersized and pumping stations are technically inadequate; overflow into the lake may occur during high tourist activity or extreme rainfall without proper maintenance. Phytoplankton blooms other than cyanobacteria are normal in the lake but pose no toxicity concerns.
