Grigneto

Italy Lake 1 - Excellent

Chalet - Grigneto is a bathing area on the grassy shoreline of Lake Grande di Avigliana in the Piedmont region of Italy. The beach features a gently sloping bottom and a small harbour with mooring pontoon for recreational boats. The bathing area is privately owned by a restaurant and small sailing club, with two bars providing services to visitors. The water is classified as Excellent based on monitoring data from 2020–2023.

Water

Lake Grande di Avigliana. Surface area of bathing zone: 0.229 km². Altitude: 346 metres above sea level. The lake basin is enclosed by hills, with discontinuous urban development around the shoreline.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent. Based on 18 routine samples collected 2020–2023. Escherichia coli at 90th percentile: 20.2 MPN/100 ml; 95th percentile: 32.3 MPN/100 ml. Enterococci at 90th percentile: 21.2 MPN/100 ml; 95th percentile: 34.0 MPN/100 ml. The bathing water is located in the homogeneous zone Avigliana 1 with a medium-high impact indicator driven by class IV sewerage infrastructure.

Risks

The lake is in a state of eutrophy due to historical pollution from direct sewage discharges. Cyanobacterial blooms have been detected; in the past four years, 12 cyanobacterial samples were analysed, of which 4 showed cell densities of 20,000 cells/ml or higher. The bathing water is at risk of cyanobacterial proliferation. Short-duration pollution events may occur due to undersizing of the circumlake sewer collector and inadequate lifting stations, particularly during high tourist influx without proper maintenance. Phytoplankton blooms other than cyanobacteria are normal but pose no toxicity concerns. No toxic effects have been reported.
