Groß Leuthener See is a 115-hectare natural lake located approximately 20 km northeast of Lübben towards Beeskow on the Leuthen Sand Plateau. The lake stretches in a bow shape between Groß Leuthen on the western shore and Klein Leuthen on the eastern shore. Due to its wind-exposed location and shallow average depth of 2.4 metres, the lake is well mixed. The 27 km² catchment area consists of approximately 68% forest, predominantly pine, and 23% arable land. The lake is surrounded by a 50 to 100-metre-wide tree-lined riparian strip with reeds along the eastern shore and water lilies in shallower bays.
