Briesener See is a shallow, oblong lake located approximately 8 km east of Lübben in the western foothills of the Lieboroser plateau. The lake has a surface area of approximately 54.65 hectares and features white sandy beaches. It is a popular recreational area with camping facilities and a bungalow settlement. The lake has very soft, low-lime water with clear clarity and low nutrient content. Reed vegetation is poorly developed despite gently sloping shores.

Water

Natural lake in lowland terrain (elevation less than 200 m). Surface area: 54.65 hectares. Mean depth: 1.7 metres. Maximum depth: 3.8 metres. Water exchange time: 12.6 years. Lake geology: sandy. Shore composition: sand with natural/near-natural structure. Water transparency ranges from 0.7 to 2.0 metres (mean 1.4 metres). Water temperature ranges from 14.2 to 24.7 degrees Celsius (mean 21 degrees Celsius). pH ranges from 7.75 to 8.39 (mean 7.99). Salinity less than 0.5 per mille.

Location

Located approximately 8 km east of Lübben. The bathing area is situated at the southern east shore, where a campsite is located. A bungalow settlement is located at the southern tip of the lake. Beach length is 500 metres.

Season

Four-weekly monitoring conducted by the district health authority according to Brandenburg bathing water regulations.

Water Quality

Classified as excellent for all monitoring periods from 2016–2019 through 2021–2024. Escherichia coli (95th percentile): 32–33 per 100 ml. Intestinal enterococci (95th percentile): 33–48 per 100 ml. Ecological status class: moderate (ÖZK 3) according to Water Framework Directive 2024 assessment. Natural nutrient content: mesotrophic. Measured nutrient content: eutrophic. No individual exceedances of microbiological parameters observed. No cyanobacterial blooms observed. No macroalgae or aquatic plants present.

Risks

No observed cyanobacterial water blooms during bathing season. No danger of future cyanobacterial mass development. No danger of mass development of macrophytes or macroalgae. No risk of bathing dermatitis caused by cercariae. Short-term microbiological contamination not expected. Other pollution not expected.
