The Grünewalder Lauch is a residual lake from brown coal mining situated approximately 11 km northeast of Elsterwerda on the eastern edge of the Lower Lusatia Heathland Nature Park. Coal extraction at this site was abandoned in 1965, and the pit filled with groundwater by 1972, being converted into a bathing lake in 1977. The lake has a rectangular water surface area of 93.63 hectares with a maximum depth of 14.4 metres in the northeast, while southern areas average 6 metres depth. The water has characteristically acidic pH values around 2.9 due to iron-sulphur compounds in the tertiary overburden material from mining operations.
