Herault-Le Village

Le Village is a bathing area in Laroque, Hérault, France. The site drains a large watershed comprising three watercourses: the Vis, the Hérault, and the Rieutord. Summer storm episodes can cause fecal contamination in the bathing zones. Since improvements to wastewater treatment systems and storm overflow management in 2011, water quality has generally improved to good or excellent levels over the past four years.

Water

The bathing area is located on the Hérault river, which drains a watershed formed by three watercourses: the Vis, the Hérault, and the Rieutord. The Rieutord is dry for much of the year. The Vis and Hérault are susceptible to summer storm episodes.

Monitoring occurs during the bathing period. Bathing interdiction orders are issued by the municipality in case of storms.

Water Quality

Water quality classification is good to excellent over the past four years according to ARS monitoring. Bathing closures occurred in 2016 and 2017 due to contamination events. Summer storms can introduce fecal contamination. Faecal streptococci are discharged from the Cazilhac wastewater treatment plant into the Boulidou stream, which confluences with the Hérault opposite the village. Inadequately treated effluent from Moulès-et-Baucels discharges into the Aubanel stream, which carries significant pollutant load during storm episodes.

Risks

Summer storm episodes can cause fecal contamination. Upstream storms without local rainfall may go undetected by the current monitoring system. The Aubanel stream and Cazilhac wastewater treatment plant discharge contribute to contamination during storm events.
