Horstmarer See is an artificial bathing lake located in the lowlands with a surface area of 9.7 hectares. The bathing zone covers a 300-meter stretch of shoreline with sandy substrate and unshifted water characteristics. The lake is fed by groundwater and can receive water from the Datteln-Hamm Canal as needed. Water transparency averages 1.83 meters, with temperatures ranging from 14.8 to 26 degrees Celsius.

Water

Artificial lake with a surface area of 9.7 hectares. Water body depth ranges to a maximum of 6 meters with a mean depth measurement. The lake has a very small catchment area of less than 10 square kilometers. Substrate and shoreline structure are sandy. Water temperature ranges from 14.8 to 26 degrees Celsius with an average of 19.7 degrees Celsius. pH values range from 8.09 to 9.07 with an average of 8.56. Water transparency averages 1.83 meters, ranging from 1.0 to greater than 2.0 meters. Water exchange is maintained through groundwater permeation and possible water input from the Datteln-Hamm Canal.

Location

The lake is operated by the city of Lünen, located at Willy-Brandt-Platz 1, 44530 Lünen. The sampling point is at UTM coordinates E: 399286 N: 5717474. The lake was constructed for the LAGA Lünen in 1996.

Water Quality

Water quality ratings over the past four years: 2020 excellent, 2021 good, 2022 adequate, 2023 good. The bathing water has been designated as an EU bathing water since 1996. No microbiological or chemical contamination of sediments has been identified.

Risks

High populations of Canada geese are present with occasional possible influence on water quality. Isolated suspected cases of cercariae (duck flea) causing swimmer's dermatitis have been reported. No observed cyanobacterial blooms within the past four years, and no danger of future mass development of cyanobacteria is assessed. No danger of future mass development of macroalgae or phytoplankton is assessed.
