Germany Lake 1 - Excellent

Ternscher See is an artificial lake bathing area located in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The bathing water has been officially designated since at least 1992. The water body covers 13.2 hectares with a sandy substrate and maximum depth of 12 metres. Water quality has been rated as excellent for four consecutive years (2020–2023). To maintain water quality, permanent deep water extraction is conducted.

Water

Artificial lake covering 13.2 hectares. Sandy substrate and bottom composition. Maximum depth 12 metres. Water temperature range: 15.8–26.8°C (mean 20.0°C). pH range: 8.03–8.79 (mean 8.45). Conductivity range: 268–392 µS/cm (mean 354 µS/cm). Water transparency range: 1.2 to >2.0 metres (mean 1.9 metres). Catchment area very small (<10 km²). Located at lowland elevation (<200 m above sea level).

Location

Located in the Unna district. The bathing area has 1,800 metres of shoreline and 110 metres of beach. Administered by Moritz Graf vom Hagen Plettenberg, Haus Sandfort, Sandforter Straße 5, 59399 Olfen.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent (2020, 2021, 2022, 2023). No relevant pollution sources identified. No microbiological or chemical contamination in sediments detected. Deep water extraction is conducted permanently to maintain water quality.

Risks

Cyanobacteria blooms: none observed in the past four years; future risk assessed as low. Macroalgae and phytoplankton: future mass development risk assessed as low. Gull presence causes occasional microbiological impacts. Cercaria (swimmer's itch) not known to occur.
