Radžu reservoir is a bathing water body in Latvia that is monitored for water quality according to EU Directive 2006/7/EK. The bathing water profile describes the physical, geographical, hydrological, and coastal characteristics of the reservoir, as well as pollution sources and the potential for algal blooms. Water quality is assessed using microbiological indicators and classified into four categories: excellent, good, sufficient, or poor quality. The profile was developed by the Health Inspectorate in cooperation with the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified according to four categories: excellent, good, sufficient, and poor. Assessment is based on microbiological indicators: Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. Excellent quality requires E. coli ≤500 CFU/100 ml (95th percentile) and enterococci ≤200 CFU/100 ml (95th percentile). Good quality requires E. coli ≤1000 CFU/100 ml (95th percentile) and enterococci ≤400 CFU/100 ml (95th percentile). Sufficient quality requires E. coli ≤900 CFU/100 ml (90th percentile) and enterococci ≤330 CFU/100 ml (90th percentile). Bathing is prohibited if E. coli exceeds 3000 CFU/100 ml or enterococci exceed 500 CFU/100 ml, or if excessive cyanobacteria blooms are observed.

Risks

Fecal pollution from sewage discharge; cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) blooms; point source and diffuse pollution sources; excessive nutrient loading (eutrophication).
