Juodkrantės beach is a 1500-metre sandy natural beach located in the Neringos municipality in Klaipėdos district, Lithuania. The beach has an average water depth of 1.20 metres and a maximum depth of 1.80 metres. The coastline consists of natural sand with no submerged or emergent vegetation. Water quality has met excellent standards consistently from 2018 to 2024 in accordance with EU Directive 2006/7/EB.

Open Baltic Sea sandy coastal waters. Beach length: 1500 metres. Average water depth: 1.20 metres. Maximum water depth: 1.80 metres. Average annual rainfall in the basin: 778 mm. Water body ecological status: moderate. The water body is classified as an open Baltic Sea sandy coastal strip.

Location

The beach is located in Neringos municipality, Klaipėdos district, Lithuania. Monitoring coordinates are X=55.5397, Y=21.0981. The beach is publicly managed.

Facilities

Toilets: 1 container toilet and 5 outdoor toilets. Showers: none. Lifeguard station and lifeguard post located on the beach dune. Waste management: garbage and other waste collected daily until 9:00 am during summer season. Bins emptied in mornings until 8:00 am during summer season. Pets: domestic animals and other pets prohibited on the beach. Maximum visitor capacity: approximately 2000 people during peak season under favorable weather conditions.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: excellent (2018-2024). Monitoring conducted according to EU Directive 2006/7/EB. Water transparency remains stable at approximately 1 metre. Marine phytoplankton increases occur almost annually depending on air temperature, wind direction, and beach morphology, typically occurring July-August for up to 1.5 weeks. Water enrichment with nutrients is primarily natural in origin, though occasional anthropogenic sources exist from passing vessels and currents transporting pollution from other areas.

Risks

Oil product spills from passing vessels or disturbance of old pollutants from the seabed occur approximately once every 2-3 years and depend on weather conditions and wind direction. Potential pollution sources include the Klaipėda port territory located approximately 20 kilometres upstream and an oil platform (D6) in Russian Federation territory located approximately 40 kilometres away. Marine phytoplankton blooms occur regularly in July-August. Motorised watercraft prohibited except for lifeguard vessels and authorised commercial operators.
