Kabakum Central is a 1400-meter beach located on Bulgaria's Black Sea coast near Varna. The beach features coarse-grained sand with a steep shoreline that quickly reaches significant depth. The area is heavily urbanized and developed as a resort complex with numerous villas, hotels, and spa centers. Water sports activities including parasailing, jet skis, and water wheels are offered, along with beach volleyball and handball competitions.

Water

Sea (Black Sea). The beach stretches 1400 meters along the coastline. The seafloor is characterized by coarse-grained sand with a steep gradient descending quickly to significant depth.

Location

Varna Region, northeastern Black Sea coastal district, Bulgaria. The beach is accessible by private and public transport and is situated within a resort complex surrounded by villa communities and vacation facilities.

Facilities

10 lifeguard stations, sanitary facilities, showers, changing rooms, 4 medical stations. Accessible facilities for persons with disabilities. Waste bins available. Dogs prohibited.

Season

Official monitoring conducted from June through September based on water and air temperature data recorded.

Water Quality

Monitoring results from 2007 to 2021 show variable compliance. The water was classified as Poor (not compliant with mandatory values) in 2007, Excellent (compliant with guide values) in 2008–2009 and 2011–2014, Good or Sufficient (compliant with mandatory values) in 2010 and 2012, and Good in 2015–2020, with Excellent classification in 2021. Primary pollution sources include diffuse wastewater discharges from villas and drainage water runoff. The nearby Zlatni Piasaci wastewater treatment plant (operational since 1983) serves the resort complex. Potential contamination also exists from unregulated discharges from villa, hotel, and commercial establishments, and from landslide-related accidents in the area.

Risks

Possible short-term contamination from drainage ditches and diffuse wastewater sources from villas. The coastal zone is one of the largest landslide areas in the region, currently stabilized but with ongoing groundwater problems. In 2010, treated wastewater discharge near the bathing zone was detected but has since been remedied. Deep-sea discharge point is located 2 kilometers offshore opposite the port.
