Kleinowsee is a natural lake situated in northeastern Brandenburg, southeast of Prenzlau in the Uckermark Hills. It is part of the Hohengüstow-Lützlow lake chain, designated as a Natura 2000 European protection area. The lake has a surface area of 13.4 hectares with an elongated, curved basin and steep shores. Maximum depth reaches 22 metres. The lake is surrounded entirely by arable land separated by a narrow line of trees. Water transparency is high, with measurements between 0.7 and 3.5 metres during the bathing season.

Water

Natural lake with surface area of 13.4 hectares. Maximum depth of 22 metres. Two smaller inflows in the south and southeast, typically carrying little water. Water transparency ranges from 0.7 to 3.5 metres with a mean of 2 metres. pH values range from 8.17 to 8.38 (mean 8.26). Freshwater with salinity less than 0.5 per mille. Water temperature ranges from 9.3 to 25 degrees Celsius with a mean of 20 degrees Celsius.

Location

Located in northeastern Brandenburg, southeast of Prenzlau in the Uckermark Hills region. The bathing area is designated as Neu Kleinow on the northern shore. Coordinates: Rechtswert 3433200, Hochwert 5900643. Beach length is 20 metres.

Season

Monitored through four-weekly sampling by the local health authority according to Brandenburg Bathing Water Regulations.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent (ausgezeichnet) for all assessment periods 2016–2019 through 2021–2024. Microbiological parameters measured: E. coli and intestinal enterococci show no individual value exceedances. For 2021–2024 period: E. coli 95-percentile 54/100ml, 90-percentile 43/100ml; intestinal enterococci 95-percentile 20/100ml, 90-percentile 19/100ml. No cyanobacteria blooms observed. Lake is eutrophic (nutrient-rich) with measured nutrient levels classified as high.

Risks

Macroalgae and aquatic plants present. No danger of mass development of cyanobacteria observed or anticipated. No danger of cercarial dermatitis. No short-term or other pollution events expected.
