Kuhsee Gramzow

Germany Lake 1 - Excellent

Großer Kuhsee is a natural lake near Gramzow in northeastern Brandenburg, designated as a Natura 2000 European protection area. The lake extends 1.5 km in a west-east direction with a surface area of 25.5 hectares. It is surrounded by a dense reed belt and is separated from surrounding agricultural fields by narrow tree belts. The lake receives water from three tributaries and has a maximum depth of 12 meters with stable temperature stratification in summer.

Water

Natural freshwater lake with a surface area of 25.56 hectares. Maximum depth is 12 meters. The eastern section is approximately 300 meters wide, while the western part is a narrow channel approximately 100 meters wide. Water transparency at the bathing site ranges from 0.7 to 3 meters with a mean of 1.5 meters. Water temperature ranges from 9.8 to 25.5 degrees Celsius with a mean of 20 degrees. pH ranges from 8.2 to 8.55 with a mean of 8.32. Salinity is less than 0.5 per mil. The lake is stratified.

Location

Located southeast of Prenzlau in the Uckermark Hills in northeastern Brandenburg. The bathing site is on the eastern shore and is 35 meters long. Coordinates: Rechtswert 3431883, Hochwert 5895891.

Volleyball available. No facilities listed for lifeguards, toilets, showers, or disabled access.

Season

Monitored during the bathing season with samples taken every four weeks by the district health authority.

Water Quality

Rated as excellent for the periods 2016-2019, 2017-2020, 2018-2021, 2019-2022, 2020-2023, and 2021-2024. Escherichia coli measured at 95-percentile: 39 (2020-2023), 29 (2021-2024), 66 (2019-2022). Intestinal enterococci measured at 95-percentile: 57 (2020-2023), 63 (2021-2024), 73 (2019-2022). No exceedances of microbiological parameters have occurred. The lake is classified as nutrient-rich.

Risks

Cyanobacterial blooms observed occasionally during the bathing season with low to moderate risk of future mass development. Macroalgae and aquatic plants present. No risk of swimmer dermatitis from cercariae. No short-term or other pollution expected.
