Kragesand

Kragesand is a gravel beach located on the southern tip of Broagerland, stretching approximately 600 metres along Flensborg Fjord. The beach features scattered seaweed and a gravel sandbank marking the southernmost point of the peninsula. The seabed consists of sand with few scattered stones and reaches a depth of 1 metre at approximately 10 metres from shore. The water is brackish with salinity levels between 16–24 ‰.

Marine brackish water body in Flensborg Fjord. Salinity: 16–24 ‰. Beach length: approximately 600 metres. Water depth reaches 1 metre at approximately 10 metres from shore. Current direction is primarily westward, southwestward, northwestward, eastward, southeastward, or southeastward, determined by water movement in Flensborg Fjord and the shape of the gravel sandbank.

Location

Kragesand is located on the southern tip of Broagerland, facing Flensborg Fjord. Access is via the road Kragesand, which terminates at a car park. The address for emergency services is Kragesand 10, 6310 Broager.

1 June to 15 September

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as excellent. Monitoring is conducted from 1 June to 15 September by laboratory analysis of water samples for E. coli and intestinal enterococci. Analysis results from the last four years show no exceedances of faecal bacteria threshold values. Six properties in the immediate catchment area have individual wastewater treatment systems with mechanical treatment and direct discharge to Skelde Mose watercourse, located approximately 80 metres upstream of the bathing area.

Risks

Risk of seaweed (macroalgae) wash-up exists; bathing is generally not recommended during large quantities of seaweed in the shoreline due to possible toxin formation in decaying seaweed and the protection of disease-causing bacteria. Risk of cyanobacteria blooms is very low with no previous observations. Risk of phytoplankton blooms during the bathing season is low. Fecal contamination from individual households connected to Skelde Mose watercourse is possible, particularly during heavy rainfall and when currents flow southwestward; contamination is typically short-lived, lasting a maximum of 3 days.
