Broager Strand Camping

Broager Strand Camping is a 450-meter-long sandy beach with stones located on Broagerland facing Sønderborg Bay. The beach is 10–20 metres wide with gradual access to deeper water. The seabed consists of sand and stones, with 1-metre depth reached approximately 20–25 metres from shore, extending to 30–40 metres near the Krumbæk outlet. The beach is backed by protected marshland, woodland, and agricultural fields.

Water

Marine brackish water with salinity of 16–24 ‰. The beach is approximately 450 metres long and 10–20 metres wide. Dominant current directions are northerly or westerly, determined by water movement in Sønderborg Bay.

Location

Located on Broagerland in Sønderborg Municipality, Denmark, facing Sønderborg Bay. Three access routes serve the beach: from north and south via Skeldebro, and from west via Folekobbel. Parking is available where Folekobbel meets Skeldebro.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as excellent based on four years of data. Monitoring conducted from 1 June to 15 September annually tests for faecal coliform bacteria (E. coli) and intestinal enterococci. No exceedances of faecal coliform limits have been recorded in the past four years. Potential pollution sources include wastewater from properties not connected to public sewers, with mechanical treatment systems, and discharge from Krumbæk stream, which has a moderate ecological status.

Risks

Small risk of faecal coliform bacteria from individual household wastewater system failures during heavy rainfall, though the dominant current patterns typically direct discharge away from the bathing area. Very low risk of cyanobacteria blooms; no blue-green algae have been observed. High risk of seaweed (macroalgae) wash-up, though this has not degraded water quality. Decomposing seaweed can produce toxins and harbour disease-causing bacteria.
