Plage de la Fosse aux Vaults is the smallest and least frequented beach in Saint-Lunaire, located on the Emerald Coast in the English Channel. The beach can be assimilated to a large cove with more pronounced relief than other beaches in the municipality. The bathing zone is more reduced than other beaches, and a mooring area borders it to the north. The beach is exposed directly north and is relatively sheltered from the strongest swells.

The beach faces the English Channel with a tidal range exceeding 13 meters typical of the Saint-Malo region. The intertidal zone (estran) on Fosse aux Vaults extends 280 meters. Average annual wave height is approximately 0.9 meters from the northwest with a frequency of 5 seconds. Water depth at the offshore monitoring point is 28.6 meters.

Location

Saint-Lunaire, a coastal municipality in the English Channel, is located in northern Ille-et-Vilaine department, in the Saint-Malo district, approximately 75 km from Rennes and 13 km from Saint-Malo. The beach is situated on the Emerald Coast between rocky coastlines, with the Pointe du Nick forming its western boundary.

Water quality for Plage de la Fosse aux Vaults is classified as excellent across all beaches in Saint-Lunaire according to state services. The municipality holds the Blue Flag label and practices exemplary wastewater management. The bathing profile was created to identify potential sources of microbiological contamination to maintain and enhance this excellent quality status.

Risks

Currents in the area flow from west before high tide and east after high tide. On Fosse aux Vaults, currents are weakened by the Pointe du Nick to the west, with average intensity on the beach. Current intensity is more marked before high tide due to reduced protection from the Pointe du Nick. The beach is exposed to winds predominantly from the southwest, particularly in autumn and winter.
