La Grande Plage is the emblematic beach of Saint-Lunaire, located in the heart of the town on the Emerald Coast in Brittany. It is backed by a fully urbanized seafront promenade and is bounded by rocky points to the east and west. The main watercourse of the commune, the Crévelin, flows into the eastern end of the beach. Sandy accumulations from the recent quaternary period are significant in this coastal sector.

Water

The beach is situated on the English Channel coast. Tidal range exceeds 13 metres. The foreshore retreats between 550 and 600 metres at low tide. Average wave height is around 0.9 metres from the northwest with a 5-second frequency. Currents flow westward before high tide and eastward after high tide, though their intensity is reduced on the beach by the protection of surrounding rocky points.

Location

Saint-Lunaire is a coastal commune in the Emerald Coast region, located in northern Ille-et-Vilaine department, in the Saint-Malo district, approximately 75 km from Rennes and 13 km from Saint-Malo.

Water Quality

Water quality of Saint-Lunaire beaches is classified as excellent by state services. The municipality holds the Blue Flag label and implements exemplary sanitation management.

Risks

The beach is less exposed to strong waves than other local beaches. Current intensity is more marked during ebbing tide on the eastern side due to weaker protection from Pointe du Nick. Northeast waves can enter the beach fully on its eastern flank.
