The Semois at Bouillon (Pont de France) is an officially designated bathing zone located in the Semois-Chiers sub-basin within the international Meuse hydrographic district. The bathing area stretches 142 metres along the river, which averages 30 metres in width with depths ranging from 0.1 to 3 metres. The riverbed is characterised by silt and gravel. The zone has exhibited good water quality for many years, though recent years showed sufficient quality levels.

Location

Bouillon, located at an altitude of 232 metres. The bathing zone is designated as Pont de France (PDF) at Bouillon, situated upstream of the town.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: good for many years, though recently rated as sufficient. The zone is hydrographically situated within SC31R (Mambes stream) and SC37R (Semois IV) water bodies. Multiple contamination sources have been identified upstream including wastewater collector crossings, storm water overflows, and a wastewater treatment plant. The zone upstream of Pont de France exhibits better quality than the downstream Pont de la Poulie zone.

Risks

Potential wastewater discharge from multiple sources upstream of the bathing zone. Identified contamination sources include: wastewater collector crossings at 0.25 and 0.95 kilometres upstream (estimated impact: low), unnamed stream (Rau) on the left bank at 0.5 kilometres (estimated impact: low), and Rue de Conques bridge at 1 kilometre with storm water overflows showing increased E. coli and enterococci concentrations (estimated impact: medium). Noirefontaine wastewater treatment plant is located more than 10 kilometres upstream (estimated impact: very low).
