La Semois À Bouillon (Pont De La Poulie)

The Pont de la Poulie bathing zone in Bouillon is located on the Semois river at an altitude of 230 metres. The beach is 108 metres long with a river width of approximately 30 metres and water depths ranging from 0.1 to 1.1 metres. The riverbed consists of silt and gravel. The bathing zone has experienced recurring contamination problems resulting in five closures since the early 2000s, contrasting with the upstream Pont de France zone which has remained uncontaminated.

Bouillon, Belgium. Located downstream of Bouillon village. The upstream Pont de France bathing zone (H34) is approximately 1.8 kilometres away.

Water Quality

Water quality classification shows recurring contamination problems. Faecal bacteria concentrations measured in 2016 and 2017 showed variable results depending on river discharge rates. When Semois discharge exceeded 10 m³/sec, water quality degradation was observed. Primary contamination sources identified include intermittent wastewater and clear water discharges from Boulevard Vauban, wastewater discharges into the Voie des Chevaux stream, and the operation of combined sewer overflows.

Risks

Faecal contamination from wastewater sources. Intermittent discharges from the Voie des Chevaux stream, which historically functioned as a covered watercourse beneath Bouillon. Operation of combined sewer overflows, particularly during rainfall events. During high river discharge conditions (exceeding 10 m³/sec), significant contamination spikes occur.
