The Grand Large bathing zone at Péronnes (E04) is an artificially created beach located at an altitude of 20 metres within the Escaut-Lys sub-basin. The bathing area has a water surface of 43 hectares with a beach length of 40 metres and water depths ranging from 0.10 to 1.50 metres. The lake bottom is characterised by mud. The water quality has shown marked improvement since the early 2000s, being declared non-compliant only once since 2000 (in 2008), and has improved from sufficient to good quality since 2016.

Water

Lake (plan d'eau). Water surface area: 43 hectares. Minimum depth: 0.10 metre. Maximum depth: 1.50 metre. Bottom composition: mud. This water body belongs to the EL02C and EL18R water masses (Escaut I) and is classified as a large silty river with low slope.

Location

Péronnes, in the Escaut-Lys sub-basin. The bathing zone is situated at the level of the ADEPS centre pontoons, with an artificial concrete bank featuring steps and a pontoon allowing easier access to the lake.

Facilities

ADEPS centre with facilities including changing rooms and sports hall. Pontoon access available.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Good (as of 2016). The bathing zone was declared non-compliant only once since 2000 (in 2008). Monitoring campaigns conducted in 2014 and 2015 identified several contamination sources linked to wastewater discharge. During dry weather conditions, contamination is weak; during rainfall, contamination peaks are significantly higher. Main pollution sources identified: wastewater from the ADEPS complex, siphon overflows from Avenue du Lac, occasional overflows from the DO (wastewater structure), and wastewater from the village of Laplaigne. The fecal bacteria contributions have a relatively weak overall impact on the bathing water quality.

Risks

Wastewater discharge from multiple sources, particularly during rainfall events. Fecal bacteria contamination peaks observed by rainfall, linked to siphon overflow from Avenue du Lac, DO (wastewater structure) overflows, inadequate sanitation of the Laplaigne technical basin, and the Rau de Bourgeon stream which carries fecal bacteria during rainfall due to upstream network flushing.
