Carnac is a coastal municipality in Morbihan at the bottom of Quiberon Bay in Brittany, France. The coastline is characterized by an alternation of rocky outcrops and fine sandy beaches. The vulnerability profile was established to assess and understand pollution risks to bathing waters and to design measures to reduce these risks and limit user exposure to pollution.

Location

Carnac, Morbihan, Brittany, France. The municipality is bordered to the north by Ploemell and Erdeven, to the west by Plouharnel, to the east by Trinité-sur-Mer and Crach, and to the south by the Atlantic Ocean.

Water Quality

Contamination episodes were observed over the preceding ten years across all bathing and recreational foot-fishing zones in Carnac. A Type 3 vulnerability profile was established due to proven pollution risk, complex identification and evaluation of pollution sources, or unknown contamination causes. Water quality monitoring uses two bacteriological parameters: intestinal enterococci and Escherichia coli.
