Carnac is a coastal commune in Morbihan at the bottom of Quiberon Bay in Brittany. The shoreline is characterized by alternating rocky outcrops and fine sand beaches. The town has several bathing zones and recreational foot-fishing areas that have experienced contamination episodes over the past ten years.

Location

Carnac, Morbihan, Brittany. Bordered to the north by Ploumel and Erdeven, to the west by Ploemeur, to the east by Trinité-sur-Mer and Crach, and to the south by the Atlantic Ocean.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored according to European Directive 2006/7/CE using two bacteriological parameters: intestinal enterococci and Escherichia coli. Contamination episodes have been observed over the past ten years. A Type 3 vulnerability profile was established because the risk of water pollution is confirmed and the identification and evaluation of pollution sources is complex or causes of contamination are unknown.

Risks

Identified bathing zones and foot-fishing areas are vulnerable to pollution from multiple sources including collective sewerage systems, non-collective sewerage systems, diffuse pollution, and accidental discharges. Potential sources of macroalgae and phytoplankton proliferation have been identified.
