The Des Granges and Sauveterre beaches are located in the commune of Olonne-sur-Mer in the Vendée department. These bathing waters are classified as vulnerability profile type 1. The beaches are situated on the Atlantic coast of France and are subject to tidal influences and oceanic currents typical of the region.

Atlantic coastal waters subject to tidal currents with maximum tidal current velocities in spring tides. The study area includes watershed basins draining into the sea near the beaches via the Auzance and Vertonne rivers.

Location

Olonne-sur-Mer, Vendée department, France. The beaches of Des Granges and Sauveterre are adjacent to the communes of Bretignolles-sur-Mer and Brem-sur-Mer.

Water Quality

Bacteriological water quality has been monitored since 2006. Quality classifications follow current and future European regulations. Shellfish harvesting areas in proximity are monitored through the REMI network (IFREMER). Phytoplankton and phycotoxin surveillance is conducted through the REPHY network (IFREMER).

Risks

Potential pollution sources identified include collective sewerage systems, non-collective sanitation, rainwater drainage networks, and the Auzance and Vertonne rivers. Risk assessment includes scenarios for dry weather and rainfall events (10mm/1h). Macro-algae proliferation potential has been evaluated.
