Mårup Østerstrand is a bathing water located on Samsø with a sandy beach 15–20 metres wide. The water quality is classified as excellent based on data from the preceding four years. The seabed consists of sand, and water depth reaches 2 metres approximately 125 metres from the shore. Currents vary between north and south directions and are predominantly weak.

Location

Mårup Østerstrand, Samsø Kommune, Denmark. Beach access via multiple footpaths from the summer house area.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: excellent, based on four years of monitoring data. Weak elevated indicator bacteria values may be measured during strong rainfall when an overflow structure (combined sewer) in Nordby becomes operational coinciding with southward currents. Sewage treatment plant outlet located approximately 1,400 metres north of the monitoring point via a 20-metre sea outfall. No other known pollution sources in the area.

Risks

Cyanobacteria blooms may occur during specific current conditions and after several days of calm, warm weather. Macroalgae (seaweed) blooms may occur; large accumulations of seaweed at the shore edge warrant caution as decomposing seaweed can produce toxins and may shield pathogenic bacteria from UV degradation.
