Germany Lake 1 - Excellent

Mellensee is a natural lake located approximately 5 km southwest of Zossen at the southern edge of the Nuthe-Notte lowlands. The lake is part of a chain of connected lakes and has a surface area of 223 hectares with a maximum depth of 9 metres. The lake basin, which is elongated and nearly 3 km long, runs in a north-south direction and was formed during the last ice age by meltwater. The lake receives water from three main tributaries: the Schneidegraben from the west, the Wünsdorfer Kanal from the north, and a connecting channel to the Kleinen Wünsdorfer See.

Water

Natural lake with a surface area of 223 hectares, maximum depth of 9 metres, mean depth of 3 metres, and water level fluctuations of 0.5 metres. The lake is unshown in thermal stratification during summer months. Water exchange time is 4.2 years. The catchment area covers 142 square kilometres, with 57% forested and 29% used for agriculture.

Location

Located approximately 5 km southwest of Zossen in Brandenburg, Germany. The bathing area is designated as Mellensee Strandbad. Parking is available at the beach facility.

Season

Monitored through four-weekly sampling by the district health authority in accordance with Brandenburg bathing water regulations.

Water Quality

Water quality classification is excellent for all assessment periods from 2016–2019 through 2021–2024. E. coli measured at 95-percentile: 94–133 per 100 ml; intestinal enterococci at 95-percentile: 146–176 per 100 ml across recent monitoring periods. No individual parameter exceedances recorded. The lake is naturally eutrophic with measured eutrophic nutrient levels. Water transparency ranges from 0.4 to 1.0 metres with a mean of 0.6 metres. pH values range from 8.06 to 8.65 with a mean of 8.37. Ecological status classification is unsatisfactory (ÖZK 4). Water temperature ranges from 9.6 to 24.7°C with a mean of 20°C.

Risks

Cyanobacteria blooms occur frequently during the bathing season. Future mass development of cyanobacteria is assessed as frequent. Macrophytes and macroalgae are present. Phytoplankton poses a medium risk for future mass development. Oxygen balance is very uneven. Sensitive individuals should avoid bathing during algal bloom periods and follow health authority warnings.
