Kiessee Horstfelde Wasserskianlage

Kiessee near Horstfelde is a gravel pit lake located approximately 4 kilometres west of Zossen in the Nuthe-Notte Lowland region of Brandenburg. The lake is fed solely by groundwater with no inflow or outflow, currently covering approximately 15 hectares with a maximum depth of 25 metres in the water skiing area. Water visibility at the bathing area ranges from 0.7 to 1.9 metres, with turbidity caused primarily by particles from ongoing gravel extraction rather than algae. The bathing area is separated from the water skiing zone for safety reasons and features sloped, partially vegetated shores.

Water

Artificial gravel pit lake with a surface area of 14.83 hectares. Maximum depth is 25 metres. Water temperature ranges from 9.9°C to 25.3°C with a mean of 20°C. Water transparency ranges from 0.7 to 1.9 metres with a mean of 1 metre. pH ranges from 7.77 to 8.35 with a mean of 8.12. Salinity is less than 0.5‰. Water level fluctuations are 0.3 metres. The lake is groundwater-fed with no inflows or outflows.

Location

Approximately 4 kilometres west of Zossen in the Nuthe-Notte Lowland, Brandenburg. The bathing spot is at the Wasserskianlage (water ski facility) in Horstfelde.

Facilities

Beach volleyball area. Water ski facilities with two ski tow systems (circular and straight line for beginners). Sanitary facilities. Training room for water ski courses. Café. Overnight accommodation available (tent or motorhome camping). Numerous piers extending into the lake for access to facilities.

Monitoring conducted through four-weekly sampling during the bathing season.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent for all monitoring periods from 2016–2019 through 2021–2024. E. coli (95th percentile) ranged from 94 to 198 per 100 ml across monitored periods. Intestinal enterococci (95th percentile) ranged from 36 to 77 per 100 ml. No exceedances of microbiological parameter thresholds were recorded. No cyanobacterial blooms were observed. No macroalgae or aquatic plant growth identified.
