Misano Adriatico - Rio Agina is a sandy beach located in the municipality of Misano Adriatico in the Emilia-Romagna region, extending approximately 300 metres. The beach is protected by parallel breakwaters to the north and perpendicular breakwaters to the south. It is a high-traffic tourist area with numerous hotels and beach establishments that provide constant lifeguard services during the bathing season.

Water

Coastal marine water in a flat alluvial area with high stability. Beach width varies between 80–100 metres. The bathing area extends 0.336 km² and is influenced by the Rio Agina drainage basin, which covers approximately 1,257 hectares.

Location

Misano Adriatico, Province of Rimini, Emilia-Romagna region. The beach is situated in the central-southern coastal area and is accessible through the municipality.

Facilities

Seven beach establishments with first aid services, toilets accessible to disabled persons, hot showers, no architectural barriers, sports facilities, and food services. Lifeguard service present during bathing season.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent (reference years 2019–2022). Escherichia Coli at 90th percentile: 113 CFU/100 ml; at 95th percentile: 178 CFU/100 ml. Intestinal Enterococci at 90th percentile: 43 CFU/100 ml; at 95th percentile: 59 CFU/100 ml. One anomalous situation occurred on 26 July 2022 when Enterococci exceeded legal limits; this was officially declared an anomalous situation by the European Commission. Pollution sources include four stormwater discharges (separate systems) and one emergency overflow from a mixed system serving the Cattolica and Misano treatment plants, both compliant with Directive 91/271/CEE.

Risks

Potential short-duration pollution from activation of emergency overflow number 7 during intense precipitation events, which discharges diluted effluent into Rio Agina. The mouth of Rio Agina may cause eutrophication phenomena. The southern area is subject to sand nourishment interventions, while the northern area experiences sand extraction causing siltation and reduction of water depth in the bathing area.
