Molo Sud is a fine-grained quartz-feldspar and calcareous sandy beach in Senigallia with a moderate slope of 3%. The beach is protected by artificial breakwaters of the Senigallia Canal Port. The surrounding area is densely urbanized with tourist facilities and is traversed by railway lines and the riparian zone of the Misa River mouth.

Adriatic Sea bathing water in Senigallia_Ancona body. Area 0.44384 square kilometers. Sandy beach with fine quartz-feldspar and calcareous sediment. Average slope of 3% for both emerged and submerged beach.

Location

Senigallia, Ancona province, Marche region, Italy. The beach extends 800 meters in length and 70 meters in width. The distance between medium-low and high water levels is 80 meters. Astronomical tide range is 30–50 centimeters.

Water Quality

Classification category E. E. coli measurements by ARPAM in 2010 ranged from below detection limit to 300 CFU/100 ml, with most months below detection or between 10–80 CFU/100 ml. The wastewater treatment plant has a capacity of 20,000 cubic meters per day and serves approximately 39,300 equivalent inhabitants from urban areas plus 770 from industrial activities. During heavy rainfall, combined sewers overflow and discharge to multiple locations including the Misa River mouth. Authorization limits for E. coli discharge are 500 CFU/100 ml.

Risks

Misa River mouth discharge of treated wastewater and combined sewer overflows during intense rainfall. In 2009, Fibrocapsa japonica algal bloom occurred throughout August, causing reddish-brown water discoloration and oily consistency. In 2007, a fuel oil spill from the API Refinery caused temporary closure of bathing areas.
