Rotonda is a sandy beach in Senigallia, Marche region, with fine quartz-feldspar and limestone-flint sand sloping at an average of 3%. The beach stretches 500 metres in length and 70 metres in width. The surrounding area is densely urbanised with tourist facilities and railway passage. The beach experiences a maximum of 8,000 daily bathers during peak season.

Marine bathing water with an extension of 0.67297 square kilometres. Average distance to mid to high tide water level: 80 metres. Astronomical tidal range: 30–50 centimetres.

Water Quality

Water quality classification E. Senigallia's sewerage network serves all urbanised territory. Wastewater treatment occurs at an activated sludge plant located near the Misa River mouth with a capacity of 20,000 cubic metres per day or 100,000 equivalent inhabitants. The plant serves approximately 39,300 urban equivalent inhabitants and approximately 770 from industrial activities. E. coli monitoring (ARPAM) in 2010 ranged from below detection limit to 300 CFU/100 ml.

Risks

During intense rainfall, sewerage flows increase considerably with risk of overflow discharge to alternative recipients. A major pollution incident occurred on 4 April 2007 when fuel oil ATZ was spilled from a broken pipeline at the API Refinery, causing temporary closure of the bathing area. Fitoplankton proliferation of Fibrocapsa japonica occurred in August 2009, causing brownish-reddish discolouration and oily water consistency.
