Monte Gordo is a coastal bathing water located on an urban beach with intensive use in the municipality of Vila Real de Santo António. The beach features golden sand with an extensive sandy area and dunes, situated in a wide bay of calm and tepid waters. The beach extends 2,050 metres, with a tidal range of 3.4 metres and typical wave heights of 0.5 metres. Jellyfish may occasionally appear in the bathing water. The western part of the beach is used by small fishing boats.

Coastal bathing water in the Guadiana river basin. Water body code CWB-I-7. Beach length 2,050 metres. Tidal range 3.4 metres. Mean wave height 0.5 metres. Predominant wind direction east to southeast.

Location

Monte Gordo, Vila Real de Santo António municipality. Monitoring point coordinates: 37.1763° N, 7.4518° W (ETRS 89).

Season

1 June to 30 September 2025. Monthly sampling frequency.

Water Quality

Water quality classification for 2024 complies with Decreto-Lei 135/09. Monte Gordo and Santo António bathing waters are grouped together for monitoring purposes. No days of bathing prohibition or advisory due to short-term pollution occurred during the 2024 bathing season.

Risks

Microbiological contamination may occur due to sporadic malfunction of sanitation infrastructures or during heavy rainfall events causing surface run-off and overflows. Jellyfish are likely to appear in the bathing water. Cyanobacteria proliferation is unlikely. Macroalgae proliferation is common. Phytoplankton proliferation is unlikely.
