Santo António is a coastal bathing water located on an urban beach with restricted use, situated within a Natura 2000 protected area and associated with sensitive natural systems. The beach features golden sand with an extensive shoreline of 900 metres and dunes with typical diversified flora. The sea is calm with tepid water. Jellyfish are likely to occur in this bathing water.

Vila Real de Santo António municipality. Monitoring point coordinates: latitude 37.1726°, longitude -7.42235° (ETRS 89). The bathing waters at Santo António and Monte Gordo are grouped together for monitoring purposes, with this point representing both locations.

Season

June 1st to September 30th, 2025. Monthly sampling frequency.

Water Quality

Water quality classification for 2024 complies with Decreto-Lei 135/09. No days of bathing prohibition or advisories occurred due to short-term pollution during the 2024 bathing season. Short-term pollution is scarce. Microbiological contamination may occur due to sporadic malfunction of sanitation infrastructures or during heavy rainfall events causing surface run-off and overflows.

Jellyfish are likely to occur. Potential microbiological contamination sources include sanitation infrastructures. Cyanobacteria proliferation is unlikely. Macroalgae proliferation is frequent. Phytoplankton proliferation is unlikely.
