Nymphensee Brieselang

Germany Lake 1 - Excellent

Nymphensee is a quarry lake located southeast of Brieselang in the Havelland district. It was created in the 1930s from sand extraction for the construction of the Berlin Ring motorway. The lake has no surface inflows or outflows and is fed entirely by groundwater. It covers 15.2 hectares with a maximum depth of 6 to 7 metres and is known for its clear water with average visibility of 2.6 metres at the bathing site.

Water

Quarry lake (Baggersee) with surface area of 15.2 hectares and maximum depth of 6 to 7 metres. The lake has a triangular shape with no surface inflows or outflows, fed by groundwater. pH ranges from 8.1 to 8.6. Water transparency averages 2.6 metres with maximum of 3 metres and minimum of 1.2 metres. Freshwater with negligible salinity (<0.5‰). Water temperature ranges from 11.9°C to 28°C with mean of 22.1°C.

Location

Southeast of Brieselang in Havelland district. The bathing site is located at the northern shore with coordinates 3365697 (east) and 5827707 (north). The beach is 500 metres long.

Facilities

Bathing site with sanitary facilities, small playground, bistro. Diving base with restricted access (diving permitted by registration only). Beach volleyball facility. FKK (naturist) area present.

Season

Monitored through four-weekly sampling during bathing season by the district health authority.

Water Quality

Classified as excellent for all monitoring periods 2016–2024. Escherichia coli measurements: 95-percentile 43–48 per 100ml, 90-percentile 30–40 per 100ml. Intestinal enterococci measurements: 95-percentile 32–47 per 100ml, 90-percentile 20–39 per 100ml. No individual parameter threshold exceedances recorded. No cyanobacterial blooms observed.

Risks

Submerged aquatic vegetation present, primarily composed of narrow-leaved water-milfoil and common hornwort, covering most of the lake bottom. Low risk of swimmer's itch (cercarial dermatitis). No threat of cyanobacterial or macrophyte mass development identified. No expected short-term microbiological contamination or other pollution events.
