Location

Costarainera, Imperia province, Liguria region. The area extends 0.651 km. The Piani Paorelli hamlet and tourist services are located inland from the rocky and sandy-pebble beach.

Water Quality

Water quality classification for 2017–2020: Good. The Ligurian Sea is characterized by oligotrophic conditions that prevent cyanobacterial blooms. Ostreopsis ovata microalgae proliferation has been monitored since around one decade ago in Liguria. The reference station VASC at Santo Stefano al Mare recorded no exceedances of the 30,000 cells/litre limit from 2019 to 2023, though values between 10,000–30,000 cells/litre were recorded in August 2019 and July 2022.

Risks

The Rio dei Piani river mouth discharges directly into the bathing water. During heavy precipitation and upstream conditions, increased torrent flow can transport wastewater downstream. The Cipressa coastal treatment plant is located approximately 185 metres west of the sampling station with a sewage pipe discharging offshore. Ostreopsis ovata can produce effects from aerosol inhalation causing temporary and reversible respiratory symptoms and possible fever in sensitive individuals.
