Panemunės is a bathing beach located on the Nemunas River in Kaunas, Lithuania. The beach features a 200-meter sandy shoreline with modern recreational facilities developed in 2015. The water body has medium ecological potential but does not meet good ecological status requirements. The beach is situated near Panemunės Forest Park, a popular leisure destination for residents of Kaunas.

Water

The Nemunas River, a large flowing river in the Nemunas River Basin (LT1100). Water body type code: 4 (river). Average annual discharge: 499 mm in the basin. Average annual rainfall in the basin: 551 mm. Highest discharge occurs in January; lowest discharge occurs in September.

Location

Located in Kaunas city, Lithuania, on the Nemunas River. The beach is situated near Panemunės Forest Park on the southern bank. Coordinates: 54.8921°N, 23.9652°E.

Facilities

4 bio-toilets, 1 shower cabin, changing cabins, benches, sand and hard-surface sports courts for volleyball and basketball, children's playground, outdoor fitness equipment, bicycle path, waste bins (6 units of 0.03 m³ capacity), dedicated dog waste bins.

Season

Monitoring conducted since 2016. The beach has been under EU Bathing Water Directive (2006/7/EC) monitoring requirements since 2008.

Water Quality

Water quality classification from 2016 to 2023 was satisfactory. As of 2024, the water body is classified as having medium ecological potential and does not meet good ecological status requirements. It is designated as a risk-category water body. Biochemical oxygen demand (BDS7) concentration does not meet good ecological status requirements. Short-term pollution events were recorded on 17, 29 August and 1 September 2023 following rainfall, with microbiological test failures. Good chemical status has not been achieved. Eutrophication is possible.

Risks

Short-term pollution during rainfall events, which typically resolves within 1-2 days. Microbiological contamination detected after heavy rainfall. Eutrophication risk exists. Pets are prohibited.
