Location

Varazze, province of Savona, Liguria, Italy. The area extends 2.425 square kilometres. Access is on foot only.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent (2008-2011). No coastal wastewater treatment plants, conduits, or Imhoff tanks are present. No specific monitoring measures are currently active. River mouths (Rio dei Pescatori and Rio Portigliolo) have been identified as pollution sources.

Risks

River mouth discharges identified. A modelling approach for characterising short-term pollution events and anomalous situations is under development. No cyanobacterial blooms occur due to oligotrophic conditions in the Ligurian Sea. No cases of potentially toxic algal strain proliferation have been recorded in the past four years.
