Aiguebelle Natural Beach is a bathing site located in Le Lavandou on the Mediterranean coast. The site has been classified as EXCELLENT in water quality during the 2022 monitoring season according to European Directive 2006 standards. The beach accommodates approximately 700 users per day during peak periods. The bathing area is adjacent to a mooring zone and surrounded by restaurants and infrastructure within close proximity.

Location

Le Lavandou commune. Restaurants and infrastructure are located 10 metres from the bathing zone. A parking area is situated 50 metres from the bathing zone.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: EXCELLENT (2022 season). The site is monitored bacteriologically and complies with the European Directive 2006 requirements. Potential pollution sources include a sewage lifting station 150 metres from the beach, the Ferrandin watercourse which drains the watershed, agricultural runoff, restaurant and infrastructure wastewater, parking area runoff, and boat mooring activities.

Risks

Sewage lifting station overflow during heavy rainfall or system malfunction can cause faecal matter pollution lasting several days. The Ferrandin watercourse can transport pollutants and macro-debris into the bathing zone during heavy rainfall. Agricultural surfaces can contribute pesticides and fertilisers during runoff events. Parking area runoff can introduce hydrocarbons, mineral oils, and surfactants (lasting up to 72 hours). Boat mooring can cause momentary pollution from faecal matter and hydrocarbines. Phytoplankton species including Ostreopsis, Dinophysis, and Prorocentum present a risk of proliferation due to organic matter pollution and elevated summer water temperatures.
