La Fossette is a natural beach located in Le Lavandou on the French Mediterranean coast. The beach achieved an excellent water quality classification in the 2022 monitoring season according to the 2006 European directive. The site experiences significant summer tourism with approximately 700 daily users during peak season. Water temperature reaches a maximum of 26°C in summer. The beach is subject to occasional pollution events following heavy rain and thunderstorms, though these remain rare and brief.

Location

Le Lavandou, France. The beach is situated near numerous restaurants and infrastructure located approximately 10 metres from the bathing zone. A parking area is located 50 metres from the bathing zone. A mooring zone exists at the limit of the bathing area.

Facilities

Public information system in place. Quality commitment signage displayed. Beach infrastructure and operators present on site.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent (2022 season). The site is monitored bacteriologically. Potential pollution sources include sewage treatment overflow, agricultural runoff containing pesticides and fertilizers, hydrocarbon and mineral oil pollution from parking areas, and fecal matter from increased beach frequentation in summer. Pollution events are typically brief (lasting up to 72 hours) and occur primarily following heavy rain.

Risks

Potential pollution from sewage treatment plant overflow during network overload or heavy rain events. Storm water runoff from La Fosse stream carries agricultural and surface pollutants directly to the bathing zone. Boat mooring within 300 metres of the beach poses risk of fecal and hydrocarbon pollution. Phytoplankton risk (Ostreopsis, Dinophysis, Prorocentum) identified as a concern due to organic matter pollution. Potential for illegal wastewater connections and network dysfunction.
