L'Océan is a bathing beach located in the commune of Saint-Brévin-les-Pins. The beach is open and exposed, allowing pollution to disperse toward open water. Urbanised surfaces represent 91% of the immediate perimeter, accelerating runoff upstream of the bathing zone. The sandy shore fringe along the coastline favours infiltration. The beach is regularly subject to jellyfish arrivals.

Water

Coastal sea water. The beach is protected by sandbanks. Exposure to wave action is low and has only slight direct influence on hydrodynamics of the study zone.

Location

Saint-Brévin-les-Pins commune. The bathing zone is defined with an immediate perimeter extending 1 kilometre on either side of the beach, determined by the sewerage network.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as excellent according to the criteria of Directive 2006/7/CE. According to Directive 76/160/CEE criteria, the bathing waters have presented good quality since 2005. Microbiological data from 2006 to 2010 do not exceed thresholds set by AFSSET. Heavy rainfall events exceeding 15 millimetres are rare during summer season (12 events over 5 seasons), so the risk of bathing zone pollution due to rain is considered low in summer but exists.

Risks

Pollution sources identified include stormwater sewerage outlets (R-8000, R-8250, and notably R-8500 where pollution has been observed), inappropriate non-collective sanitation systems, poor sewerage connections, and a high concentration of birds on the beach. Southwest wind can contribute to pushing pollution onto the coastline. Jellyfish regularly arrive at the beach. No cyanobacteria-dominated algal blooms have been reported. The risk of phytoplankton blooms is low. Green tide phenomena have not been identified on the coast.
