Les Rochelets is a beach in the municipality of Saint-Brévin-les-Pins. The beach is open and exposed, allowing pollution to disperse toward the open sea relatively quickly. The beach is protected by sand banks, resulting in low exposure to swell. Urbanized surfaces make up 82% of the immediate/nearby perimeter, but sandy fringes along the coast favor infiltration. The beach experiences regular arrivals of jellyfish.

Water Quality

The profile was established in December 2010 under European Directive 2006/7/CE on bathing water quality. Bacteriological contamination risk was evaluated using vulnerability indicators and hazard assessment. The Boivre river discharge at outlet R-11250 is identified as a potential pollution source. Four pumping stations on the sewerage network can overflow and impact the bathing zone. The Rochelets wastewater treatment plant is a potential pollution source in case of failure. Poor sewerage connections and non-collective sanitation systems present risks. Contaminants are drained from the Boivre watershed, mainly from livestock areas and equestrian centers. Cyanobacteria blooms have not been reported. Phytoplankton bloom risk is low. Green tide phenomena have not been observed on the Brévinist coast.

Risks

Risk of bacterial contamination from the Boivre river discharge. Overflow risk from sewerage pumping stations, particularly the Rochelets pumping station which overflowed during summer periods since 2006. Summer population increase of 2.3 times causes increased pressure on sewerage networks. High concentration of birds on the beach. Summer rainfall events exceeding 15mm are rare (12 events over 5 seasons) but present a pollution risk. South-westerly winds can push pollution toward the coast. Regular arrivals of jellyfish occur. Risk of inondation from marine and continental submersion in the immediate/nearby area.
