Bonporteau is a Type 1 bathing water beach with a sandy and rocky shoreline. The beach is exposed to winds from all sectors and experiences significant wave action due to its abrupt bathymetric profile. Summer water temperature averages 22°C with a maximum of 26°C. The site is influenced by the Fenouillet watercourse, which drains a predominantly natural basin but passes through a former municipal waste disposal site.

Water

Mediterranean Sea beach with sandy and rocky substrate. The bathing zone has an abrupt bathymetric profile indicating significant exposure to swell and regular water mixing. Posidonie seagrass meadows are present at the beach level, indicating good environmental quality. The Fenouillet watercourse has a length of 9 kilometres, a mean flow rate of 11 m³/s, and an average slope of 11 percent.

Location

Located on the coast of the Maures region in the Mediterranean. The beach is near Cavalaire-sur-Mer. The Fenouillet watercourse approaches within less than 150 metres of the beach via a pumping station at Bonporteau.

Water Quality

The bathing water is classified as Type 1. Water quality is affected by mixed mineral and organic pollution from the Fenouillet watercourse, including high suspended solids (MES), elevated cadmium and mercury concentrations, and detergents. Phytoplankton proliferation is a potential concern, with low but documented occurrence of potentially pathogenic organisms including Ostreopsis, Dynophysis, Prorocentrum, and Coolia. Eutrophication is present. Leachate micro-pollutants from the former landfill site have been detected in the watercourse.

Risks

Phytoplankton proliferation with potential blue-green colorations and cyanobacteria, though occurrence remains low at Bonporteau. Brown foam and mucilage on rocks are possible. Elevated summer water temperature of 26°C maximum. Sewage system overflow risks during heavy rainfall events, potentially causing faecal contamination. Hydrocarbon and surfactant pollutant risks from road runoff and the APPIA artisanal zone located on road RD559. Leachate from the former landfill site on the basin can contaminate the watercourse. Maritime traffic may contribute hydrocarbons and surfactant pollutants.
