Lac du Crès is a bathing lake located in the commune of Crès in the Hérault department. The lake was formed from a former limestone quarry that operated from 1873 to 1994. Water quality analyses conducted during the final years of quarry operations showed good water quality, leading to the transformation of the site into a bathing area. In 2009, the commune created leisure and recreation areas around the lake. The lake exists due to the intersection of quarrying activity with the water table.

Water

The lake is a former quarry filled with groundwater from a karstic aquifer in Jurassic limestone. Water depth varies seasonally: 10 metres at its deepest point in winter, decreasing by 4 metres in summer. The lake has restricted extent with no currents. Dominant winds are from the north-west sector.

Location

The lake is located on the north-north-western edge of Crès, on the right bank of the Salaison stream. The commune of Crès is near Montpellier in the Hérault department.

Water Quality

Water quality analyses from 1993-1994 showed good quality. The lake is monitored under health control protocols. Water classifications and detailed monitoring results are referenced in annexes.

Risks

Potential pollution sources have been identified and assessed including cyanobacteria proliferation potential, macroalgae and phytoplankton proliferation, duck and nutria proliferation, and pollution from a nearby waste disposal site. Management and prevention measures have been established.
