Water

The bathing water is a coastal maritime zone in the Cantabrian Sea. Chlorophyll-a concentration in the Sardinero coastal water station is approximately 2.8 µg/l. Phytoplankton density in Cantabrian estuaries is homogeneous with densities below 5,000,000 cells per litre.

Location

Sardinero I is located in Santander, Cantabria. The beach is accessible by car and served by urban bus transport. Parking is available with 50–100 spaces.

Facilities

Toilets, showers, telephone, waste bins, lifeguards, rescue equipment, first aid station (Cruz Roja), cleaning services, umbrella and sunbed rental, beach bars (kioskos), signage, local police, and tourism office.

Water Quality

Water quality was classified as 'Buena' (Good) from 2005 to 2009 and 2011, and 'Muy Buena' (Excellent) in 2010. Monitoring was conducted under Directive 76/160/CEE until 2010 and Directive 2006/7/CE from 2011. Bacterial contamination levels (E. coli and Enterococci) show variation across the monitoring period.

Risks

Medium risk of non-compliance with Directive 2006/7/CE due to influence from the Santander sewage system overflow located at Chiqui. Possible existence of unidentified discharges or sewage system failures.
