Coastal maritime water body in the Cantabrian Sea. Beach length: 200 meters. Mean beach width: 50 meters. Located in the Cantabric hydrographic demarcation.

Location

Santander, Cantabria. The beach is accessible by car. Parking is available with more than 100 spaces. The nearest hospital is Valdecilla, located 5 km away. A tourism office is present on-site.

Water Quality

Water classification: Buena (Good) from 2005–2008; Muy Buena (Very Good) in 2009–2010; Suficiente (Sufficient) in 2011. Monitoring data shows bacterial contamination percentiles for E. coli and Enterococci. Cyanobacterial blooms, macroalgae, and phytoplankton levels are low. Chlorophyll-a concentration in Santander Bay is below 5 µg/l. Phytoplankton density in Cantabrian estuaries is very low, below 5,000,000 cells/l.

Risks

Medium risk of non-compliance with Directive 2006/7/CE in case of sewage system failure. Fourteen urban and emergency overflow discharge points are located near the beach, discharging continuously or during emergencies.
