Water

Coastal marine water body in the Cantabrian Sea, part of the Cantabrian hydrographic demarcation. The beach is 1000 metres long with an average width of 80 metres.

Location

Located in Santander, Cantabria, Spain. The beach is accessible by car. Parking is available with 50–100 spaces. The nearest hospital is Valdecilla, located 5 kilometres away. Urban bus transport is available.

Facilities

Lifeguards, toilets, showers, telephone, rubbish bins, cleaning service, lifesaving equipment, red cross post, local police security, beach umbrellas and sunbeds for rent, kiosks, maritime office, tourism office, maritime promenade access.

Water Quality

Water quality was classified as Buena (Good) from 2005–2009 and 2011, and Muy Buena (Very Good) in 2010, under the relevant EU bathing water directives. Chlorophyll-a concentration in Santander Bay is below 5 µg/l. Phytoplankton density in Cantabrian estuaries is homogeneous with very low densities below 5,000,000 cells/l.

Risks

High risk of non-compliance with Directive 2006/7/CE due to the influence of a relief overflow from Santander's sewage treatment system located at Chiqui. Possible existence of unidentified discharges or sewage system failures.
