Chlorophyll-a concentration in the Oriñón estuary area is below 5 µg/l. Phytoplankton density in Cantabrian estuaries remains very low, below 5,000,000 cells per litre. Chlorophyll-a concentration at the coastal water station in Castro Urdiales is around 3.1 µg/l.

Medium risk of non-compliance with Directive 2006/7/CE identified. Nine documented discharge points in the vicinity, including urban wastewater discharges from Castro Urdiales municipal sewerage and Guriezo municipal sewerage systems, and one industrial discharge from VITRINOR S.A.L.
