Playa Borizo is a natural sandy beach with white sand located in Celorio, Llanes, in the western Cantabrian region of Asturias. The beach is 400 metres long with a width of 67 metres that varies considerably. It experiences macrotidal conditions with a tidal range exceeding 4 metres. Water renewal occurs in less than 7 days, and wave conditions are typically calm. The beach has a high occupancy level and semi-urban character due to proximity to the Celorio urban nucleus and tourist facilities.

Location

Located in Celorio, municipality of Llanes, Asturias, Spain. Accessible by road with parking for over 100 vehicles. Good pedestrian access is available.

Water Quality

Water quality classified as excellent for bathing. Microbiological monitoring at sampling point PM3 shows excellent sanitary quality. The beach received Blue Flag designation in 2008 and 2009. Overall contamination risk is very low based on sanitary quality analysis results.

Risks

Local sewage system pumping/overflow station located 143 metres from sampling point PM2. Risk of exceptional discharges during system failures or overload, with potential duration under 8 hours. Risk classified as low. Occasional jellyfish sightings documented including Portuguese man o'war (Physalia physalis), sailfish (Velella velella), sea nettle (Pelagia noctiluca), and moon jellyfish (Aurelia aurita), with four incidents recorded in 2008 and 2010, and notable increases during summer 2012. Risk of jellyfish proliferation episodes classified as low. Macroalgae proliferation risk is low, occurring primarily during storms and weather phenomena. Microalgae and cyanobacteria proliferation risk is null.
