Water

Coastal marine water body located in the Eastern Coast water mass (160007). The beach is 250 metres long and 60 metres wide. Water renewal time is less than 7 days. Average wind speed is 5.24 metres per second with current direction towards west-northwest. Wave conditions are strong.

Location

Located in the municipality of Llanes in the province of Asturias, Spain, adjacent to the population of Barro. The beach is accessible by road with more than 100 parking spaces available and has good pedestrian access.

Facilities

Lifeguard service, toilets, showers, disabled access, and good pedestrian access are available.

Water Quality

Water quality has been classified as Excellent for bathing in recent years. Microbiological monitoring results show excellent sanitary quality. The beach received the Blue Flag award in 2016 and 2017. Two point sources of contamination have been identified: a wastewater discharge of unknown origin that discharges directly to the beach and a local sewerage system pump/overflow located 167 metres from the monitoring point. Overall contamination risk is low.

Risks

A wastewater discharge of unknown origin enters the beach directly and represents a short-duration contamination episode. A local sewerage pump/overflow located nearby can cause faecal discharge and loss of water sanitary quality during exceptional operational failures. Both risks are classified as low. Jellyfish occurrences are infrequent but have been documented, with Portuguese Man O'War (Physalia physalis) being the most frequently sighted species. Macroalgae proliferation risk is low due to sandy substrate and beach orientation. Microalgae and cyanobacteria proliferation risk is null.
