Playa Butihondo is a coastal bathing beach located in the municipality of Pájara on the island of Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands, Spain. The beach stretches 1,038 metres in length and has a width of 50 metres, featuring fine golden sand substrate. The water is characterised by calm conditions with wave protection, a tidal range of 1–3 metres, and shallow depths between 0 and 5 metres. The beach is exposed to motorboats, surfing, and windsurfing activities.

Location

Water Quality

Water quality classification based on four-year evaluation of faecal indicator bacteria Escherichia coli and intestinal Enterococcus. The water mass ES70FVTII (Punta Entallada – Punta de Jandía) is in good ecological condition with good or better overall state according to the Fuerteventura Hydrological Plan.

Risks

Two point sources identified: Submarine outfall of Butihondo and EDAR Hotel Club Paraíso Playa. Two watercourse contributors: Barranco Esquinzo and Barranco Butihondo. Potential short-duration contamination events including stormwater runoff from heavy rainfall, treated and untreated urban wastewater from outfall ruptures or network failures, accidental hydrocarbon and organic waste spillage, and brine discharge from desalination facilities rejection. Cyanobacteria proliferation episodes (Trichodesmium) occurred in 2004, 2010, and more intensely in 2017. No risk from jellyfish, sea urchins, or macroalgae.
