Playa Piedras Caídas is a 963-meter-long coastal bathing beach located in Pájara municipality on the island of Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands, Spain. The beach has a width of 30 meters with fine sand and rocky substrate. The water is characterized by calm conditions, protected from wave exposure, with tidal ranges of 1-3 meters and depths ranging from 0 to -4 meters. The bathing season runs from 1 February to 30 November.

Water Quality

Water quality classification based on analysis of fecal contamination indicators (Escherichia coli and intestinal Enterococci) collected over four years according to RD1341/2007. The surface coastal water body ES70FVTII - Punta Entallada – Punta de Jandía is in 'good' ecological status (biological and physico-chemical), with total status 'good or better' according to Fuerteventura Hydrological Plan.

Risks

Potential contamination sources: EDAM Club Aldiana and Butihondo submarine outfall (desalination plant). Two watercourse paths: Barranco Valluelo de La Cal and Barranco de Butihondo. Sporadic short-duration contamination episodes possible: rainwater discharge from runoff during heavy rains (possible contaminant transport from upstream) with duration under 72 hours; brine discharge (desalination rejection) with unpredictable duration under 72 hours. Cyanobacteria Trichodesmium proliferation episodes occurred in 2004, 2010, and more intensively in 2017. No risk from jellyfish, sea urchins, or macroalgae.
